{"id":3172,"date":"2022-09-02T09:02:49","date_gmt":"2022-09-02T09:02:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/content.theoneoff.com\/2022\/09\/02\/issue-126\/"},"modified":"2022-09-02T09:02:49","modified_gmt":"2022-09-02T09:02:49","slug":"issue-126","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/content.theoneoff.com\/2022\/09\/02\/issue-126\/","title":{"rendered":"Issue #126"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Welcome to your weekly dose of TooXToo, this week featuring River Studios, PLT\u2019s second hand marketplace, Serena Williams\u2019 younger AI self, and Budweiser\u2019s basketball courts\u2026&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>River Studios&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Fashion retailer River Island has unveiled their latest concept \u2018River studios\u2019 which launch in Derby\u2019s Derbion shopping centre.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The brand hopes their new concept will \u201creinvigorate the modern high-street\u201d presenting their retail with a new elevated visual approach.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"858\" height=\"1184\" src=\"https:\/\/content.theoneoff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/TOOHBM_BlogAsset_255.png\" class=\"wp-image-2720\" srcset=\"https:\/\/content.theoneoff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/TOOHBM_BlogAsset_255.png 858w, https:\/\/content.theoneoff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/TOOHBM_BlogAsset_255-650x897.png 650w, https:\/\/content.theoneoff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/TOOHBM_BlogAsset_255-850x1173.png 850w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 858px) 100vw, 858px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The brand commented on the interiors look, and feel, explaining: \u201cThe interior will present a quirky mix of old and new, to create a fresh, unique environment, where natural materials mix with recycled and distressed furnishings and juxtapose with digital content to bring River Studios to life\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>River Island have harnessed various technological elements to enhance the customer experience. For example, smart fitting rooms which will identify and display items that customers want to try, before they buy.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As well as this they have utilised RFID in their aisle design to create an omni-channel browsing space, promoting a seamless customer experience. There is also a more personalised element \u2013 an AI styling consultant \u2018Chloe\u2019 on hand to answer customer\u2019s questions and offer style advice.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>PLT\u2019s second hand marketplace<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Pretty Little Thing are responding to the desire from consumers to buy pre-loved fashion \u2013 the fashion brand is following in the footsteps of others encouraging consumers to shop more ethically.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Second hand brand eBay has been promoted as the more ethical way to shop and try new styles through TV\u2019s recent series of Love Island, and Depop has recently collaborated with Sims to bring thrifting to the digital realm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"446\" height=\"558\" src=\"https:\/\/content.theoneoff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/TOOHBM_BlogAsset_256.png\" class=\"wp-image-2721\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;PLT have created a new app which will facilitate those \u201cstriving to be more mindful when it comes to how they consume fashion\u201d, however \u2013 the marketplace has received various complaints for having misplaced intentions.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The brand has been accused for \u2018green washing\u2019, with backlash suggesting that this app is not a deep enough commitment from PLT to reverse their endorsement of fast fashion, and negative environmental impact. One PLT sceptic commented on twitter, \u201cAre you reducing the number of products you make in the first place? If not, then this is just a load of greenwash\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The message this brand is encouraging: \u2018Re-sell, re-wear, and re-cycle\u2019 is an important one, that consumers are responding to in the current climate, however, if PLT do not address other aspects of their operation which are un-sustainable, their new initiative will struggle to gain traction.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is important that when a brand wants to demonstrate an eco-centric commitment, or behaviour, that it permeates all aspects of the business to ensure that it feels genuine for customers.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Serena Williams\u2019 Younger, AI Self&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Nike have created a younger Ai version of Serena Williams to celebrate her 27th year as a professional athlete.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Collaborating with AKQA studios, Nike have been able to pit Serena Williams\u2019&nbsp; 2017 Australian Open performance, against her younger self in her first grand slam at the 1999 US open.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"518\" height=\"290\" src=\"https:\/\/content.theoneoff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/TOOHBM_BlogAsset_257.png\" class=\"wp-image-2722\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The process required acquiring hours of archival footage, which was then digitally learned by a machine learning AI tool. The result? A re-enacted performance of the professional athletes\u2019 performances from throughout her career. The accuracy of the software allowed the re-made matches to mimic Williams\u2019 exact style \u2013 including her shot selection, recovery, agility, and decision-making.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\u202fAI ran the simulated match up for 130,000 games, and the final gameplay was streamed live on YouTube to an audience of 1.69 million.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nike are demonstrating the future of sports analytics that allows for more accessible, and readable data visualisation. As well as looking back at the careers of celebrated athletes, this digital advancement will allow sport, and athletes personally to continually evolve to break new boundaries or expectations.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Budweiser\u2019s Basketball Courts\u2026<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Budweiser have exploited a legal loophole to rally different artists together in a bid to save Brazilian basketball courts from property developers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sports is an invaluable way to foster community bonds, and spirit. Sport also creates spaces for youth to express themselves and stay active. Street basketballs are as a result highly valued spaces in Brazil, but spaces that are under the watchful and dominant eye of real estate markets.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"904\" height=\"508\" src=\"https:\/\/content.theoneoff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/TOOHBM_BlogAsset_258.png\" class=\"wp-image-2723\" srcset=\"https:\/\/content.theoneoff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/TOOHBM_BlogAsset_258.png 904w, https:\/\/content.theoneoff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/TOOHBM_BlogAsset_258-650x365.png 650w, https:\/\/content.theoneoff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/TOOHBM_BlogAsset_258-850x478.png 850w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 904px) 100vw, 904px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Budweiser have identified a clause within Brazilian law to prevent these courts being taken into possession by developers.
